A Hutch That Stays Out of the Way

The Visby desk is built around a shelf shallow enough to forget it is there. A low hutch runs along the back edge of the desktop, standing under five inches high and reaching only ten inches deep, which leaves the front two thirds of the surface completely clear for a laptop and a notebook. Underneath it sit three open compartments, a narrow one at the left for small items, a wide one across the middle for books and files lying flat, and an open end at the right, while the top of the hutch closes with a flat ledge for frames, a clock or a small plant. The desktop is a painted panel with softly rounded corners, carried on four solid rubberwood legs that taper toward the floor and splay outward from the corners.

Care Instructions

• Wipe the painted top with a soft damp cloth and a mild detergent, then dry it right away

• Avoid abrasive powders, scouring pads, bleach and household cleaners on the painted surface
• Dust the solid wood legs with a dry cloth and apply a wood-safe polish a few times a year
• Keep the legs dry rather than letting water sit against the wood
• Position the desk away from radiators, heat vents and long hours of direct sunlight
• Keep the heavier books in the wide center compartment and lighter items on the top ledge
• Retighten the leg hardware every few months to keep the splayed stance firm
