A Bookshelf That Comes to You

The Kernel bookshelf is built as a square steel column with all four sides open, so shelving that would normally waste its depth becomes usable from every angle. Each tier is enclosed by four panels cut with tall rounded openings, holding books upright from the outside while leaving the interior reachable from whichever face is turned toward you. Under the base sits a 350mm turntable that carries the full loaded weight of the tower and spins it quietly through a complete circle with one hand. Below that, four casters let the whole shelf roll between rooms, each one locking down so the tower stays put while it turns. Two metal bookends cross the back of every tier to stop books tipping toward the middle, and every corner of the steel frame is rounded off rather than left as a cut edge.

Care Instructions

• Wipe the steel panels with a soft damp cloth and dry them right away to avoid water spotting
• Blot spills as soon as they happen rather than letting liquid sit on the powder-coated surface
• Avoid abrasive powders, scouring pads, bleach and household cleaners on the finish
• Lock the casters before turning the shelf so the base stays still while the top rotates
• Load the heavier books on the lower tiers and the lighter items up top so the tower stays balanced
• Spread the weight across all four faces of each tier rather than loading one side only
• Clear grit and dust from the casters and the turntable so both keep moving smoothly
• Retighten the frame hardware every few months, especially after rolling the shelf between rooms
• Keep the shelf away from prolonged damp conditions to protect the powder-coated finish
• Empty the shelves before moving the unit up or down stairs
