A Shell Drawn in One Plane

The Charlton dining chairs arrive as a coordinated set of four, each formed from a single shell that carries from the top of the back down and forward into the seat with no join between the two. Seen from the front, the shell draws in at the waist and opens again toward the shoulders, ending in a rounded crown, so the outline widens and narrows rather than running straight up. A single curved seam crosses the shell at the point where the back turns into the seat, the only break across the whole surface. Fleece fabric covers it end to end, its brushed nap softening every edge where the plane changes direction. Four tapered steel legs carry a light wood-tone finish and splay outward from the underside with nothing bridging them, each closed off with a floor-contact cap.

Care Instructions

• Vacuum the fleece regularly with a soft brush attachment on low suction to lift dust from the nap
• Brush the nap gently in one direction with a soft dry brush so the surface reads even across the curve of the shell
• Spot-clean marks with a cloth barely dampened in mild upholstery cleaner, blotting rather than rubbing
• Test any cleaner on a hidden section of the shell first, and let the surface air-dry rather than working heat over it
• Keep the fleece away from hair dryers, heaters and radiators, since the nap mats and stiffens under direct heat
• Draw a soft cloth along the waist seam, where crumbs and dust collect in the recessed stitch line
• Keep the chairs out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the upholstery over time
• Wipe the wood-tone legs with a soft damp cloth and dry immediately, avoiding abrasive pads that can lift the finish
• Check and retighten the leg bolts every few months, and keep the chairs on a level floor
