A Counter Stool Drawn in Rope

The Saumur counter height bar stool set is the woven version of this frame, built so the only pattern on the stool sits where a person leans. Solid wood makes the whole structure: the rear legs carry on above the seat as posts for the back panel, the front legs stop at the seat frame, and a stretcher closes the base on four sides at footrest height. Between the back posts a panel of rope is wound in from all four corners at once, each quarter set at its own angle until the four meet along the diagonals at the center. The seat is a square cushion in linen over an S-spring platform and high-density foam, piped around the edge and set on the wood frame below. The back reaches wider than the seat, so the panel reads as the widest thing on the stool.

Care Instructions

• Dust the woven rope back with a soft dry brush, working along the direction each quarter is wound rather than across it
• Reach into the weave with a vacuum brush attachment on a low setting to lift debris from between the strands
• Keep the rope dry and blot any splash straight away, since natural fiber cord darkens where moisture sits
• Vacuum the linen cushion weekly with a soft brush attachment, drawing along the direction of the weave
• Blot spills on the cushion straight away with a clean dry cloth rather than rubbing
• Spot clean the linen with a fabric-safe cleaner on a barely damp cloth, testing on a hidden area first
• Wipe the wood frame with a soft dry cloth, then apply a wood-safe polish a few times a year to keep the finish even
• Keep the stools out of long hours of direct sunlight, which lightens rope and wood at different rates
• Retighten the stretcher and back post hardware by hand every few months, without a power driver, since wood joints settle over the first season
