Meet Pukaki - Two Uprights, One Pillow

A dining chair back is usually one piece, upholstery stretched over a frame, and what you lean on is the padding. The Pukaki fluted wood dining chairs split that job in two. Two grooved uprights stand from the seat frame and turn outward at the top into flat wooden brackets, and the pillow that carries your back rests loose against them instead of being fastened down. Between the brackets an open channel drops down the center, so what shows from behind is the shape of the wood rather than the shape of the cushion. Fine grooves are milled into every leg and across both brackets, in narrow lines that catch light down each standing face. These chairs pull up to a weeknight table, take the two seats facing the window at a long lunch, and hold a desk in a home office. Fluted wood dining chairs, reeded dining chairs, boucle dining chairs, loose cushion dining chairs, sculptural dining chairs. Best for first-home dining rooms, open-plan households where the chair backs face the room, and anyone furnishing around milled wood rather than upholstery.

Boucle Loop Surface

Curled yarn covers the seat and the pillow in a dense field of raised loops, two shades twisted through the same weave so the surface reads mottled up close and even from across the room.

2.

Loose Back Pillow

Nothing fastens the pillow to the brackets. It leans where it is put, shifting forward for an upright seat at the table or settling back into the frame when the meal turns into an hour.

T-Shaped Bracket Top

Each upright turns outward at the top into a flat bracket that reaches sideways, and the two together frame an open channel down the middle of the back where a solid panel would otherwise close.

Solid Rubberwood Frame

shapes the legs, seat rail and backrest brackets in one hardwood throughout, holding square through years of a chair being pulled out and pushed back
