A Solid Wood Chair That Holds Square

The Mogan dining chair is cut from FAS-grade North American hardwood through the legs, the seat, the uprights and the back. A curved backrest spans between two uprights at shoulder height, its face shaped to follow the spine and its ends rounded where a hand takes hold to pull the chair out. The seat is a single panel dished toward the centre and eased at every edge, carrying the grain across the surface under a clear lacquer that leaves the figure visible. Beneath it, four tapered legs splay outward and cross into a brace that ties each leg to the one opposite, the joint that keeps a wooden chair square through years of pulling in and pushing back. Armless and just under twenty inches wide, the chair pushes fully under a dining table and stands on its own beside a desk or a window.

Care Instructions

• Dust with a soft dry cloth, following the grain rather than working across it
• Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately so water does not sit on the lacquer
• Blot spills as they happen rather than letting liquid stand along the seat edge
• Avoid abrasive powders, scouring pads, bleach and solvent-based cleaners on any surface
• Keep the chair away from radiators, heat vents and long hours of direct sunlight, which dry and fade the timber
• Use a coaster or mat if the chair doubles as a side surface, and lift hot items clear of the finish
• Keep the foot caps clear of grit, and lift rather than drag the chair when repositioning it
• Check and retighten the leg and brace bolts every few months to keep the frame square
