A Dining Chair Wound by Hand

The Arve dining chairs arrive as a coordinated pair, each seat wound by hand in paper cord over an open wood frame. The cord is wrapped from all four rails inward, and where the four faces meet it closes in a cross at the centre, a pattern that only appears once the seat is finished. Above the seat a shaped wood panel spans between two turned posts, its corners rounded off and its top edge sitting below the caps of the posts themselves, so the posts read as a pair of verticals rather than a frame around the board. Everything below is open. Low stretchers tie the legs together at staggered heights where they enter each post, and small wood plugs cover the joints along the legs. Protective pads sit under each foot.

Care Instructions

• Dust the paper cord seat weekly with a dry soft brush, working along the direction of the winding rather than across it
• Vacuum the seat on the lowest setting with a brush attachment, keeping the nozzle off the cord so individual strands are not lifted
• Keep the paper cord dry and never wash or soak it, as water swells the fibre and slackens the weave permanently
• Blot any spill on the seat immediately with a dry cloth, pressing straight down instead of rubbing across the strands
• Keep rings, buckles and pet claws off the seat, since a snagged strand cannot be worked back into a wound weave
• Avoid leaving heavy or narrow objects standing on the seat, as concentrated weight stretches the cord in one spot
• Wipe the wood frame with a soft dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals and household cleaners that can lift the sealed finish
• Keep the chairs indoors, as neither the paper cord nor the sealed frame is finished for outdoor exposure
• Keep the chairs out of prolonged direct sunlight, which fades the cord faster than the wood around it
• Check the stretcher joints every few months and retighten by hand rather than with a power driver
