Bed Sizes Chart: Twin, Full, Queen and King Bed Dimensions, Compared by Room Size

Bed sizes are usually listed as mattress sizes, and that is where most bedroom measuring goes wrong. A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches. The queen frame it sits on is not. Across the queen frames we sell, overall width ranges from 60.4 to 68.5 inches, and real king bed dimensions vary by almost 7 inches from one frame to the next. So before deciding what size bed fits your room, measure the frame, not the mattress.

This guide works the way a room actually gets furnished. Start with real frame footprints, add the walkway each side of the bed needs, then check what is left for nightstands and a dresser. Every measurement below comes from beds, nightstands and dressers you can buy today.

Bed Sizes Chart: Mattress Size vs Actual Frame Footprint

The mattress column is the standard US size. The frame column gives the bed dimensions that actually matter, which is what the bed takes up on your floor, measured from the frames we carry. Headboards, footboards and upholstered rails are what make the difference. Save this bed size chart before you shop.

Size Mattress (W x L) Real frame footprint (W x L) Best for
Twin 38 x 75 in About 42 x 80 in Kids, guest rooms, rooms under 9 x 10 ft
Twin XL 38 x 80 in About 42 x 85 in College dorms, tall teens
Full 54 x 75 in About 57 x 79 in One adult, rooms around 10 x 10 ft
Queen 60 x 80 in 60.4 to 68.5 x 81.4 to 86 in Couples, rooms from 10 x 12 ft
King 76 x 80 in 77.3 to 84 x 81.9 to 87.5 in Couples who want space, rooms from 12 x 12 ft
California King 72 x 84 in About 78 x 90.5 in Tall sleepers, long narrow rooms

Why the frame range is so wide. A headboard-free platform bed adds almost nothing to the mattress. A padded, upholstered frame wraps the mattress on every side and can add 8 inches of width. Same mattress, very different footprint.

The rule. Use the overall dimensions on the product page, not the mattress size in the title. If a listing gives only the mattress size, add 4 inches to the width and 5 inches to the length as a safe working number.

King Bed Dimensions: How Wide Is a King Size Bed, Really?

King bed dimensions start at 76 by 80 inches for the mattress, which makes a king exactly as wide as two twin mattresses side by side. So how wide is a king size bed once it sits on a frame? Across the four king frames below, the answer runs from 77.3 to 84 inches.

King frame Overall W x L Why it is that size
Noria Lift-Up Storage Bed 77.3 x 81.9 in Rails sit flush with the mattress
Elara Rubberwood Bed with 2 Drawers 79.2 x 84.7 in Rattan headboard adds depth at the head
Aveline Solid Pine Platform Bed 80.1 x 83.4 in Wide wood posts at each corner
Clara Chenille Storage Bed 84 x 87.5 in Padded upholstery wraps every side

That 6.7 inch spread matters more in a king than in any other size, because king bedrooms are often only just wide enough. On an 11 foot wall, the Noria leaves 27 inches on each side. The Clara leaves 24, which is the bare minimum before nightstands go in.

Queen Bed Dimensions: Five Real Frames Compared

Here is how far apart five queen frames land, all holding the same 60 by 80 inch mattress.

Queen frame Overall W x L Why it is that size
Noria Lift-Up Storage Bed 60.4 x 81.4 in Rails sit flush with the mattress
Celiane Storage Platform Bed 62.2 x 82 in No headboard, so almost no added length
Elara Rubberwood Bed 63.8 x 84.7 in Rattan headboard adds depth at the head
Aveline Solid Pine Platform Bed 64.8 x 83.4 in Wide wood posts at each corner
Mabel Chenille Storage Bed 68.5 x 86 in Padded upholstery wraps every side

That is an 8.1 inch spread in width. In a 10 by 10 foot room, it is the difference between almost 30 inches of walkway on each side and less than 26.

How Much Space Do You Need Around a Bed?

Clearance is what turns a bed that technically fits into a bedroom that works. These are the numbers to plan around.

Where Minimum Comfortable
Each side you get in from 24 in 30 to 36 in
Foot of the bed to a wall 24 in 36 in
In front of a dresser 36 in 42 in
Side with storage bed drawers Drawer depth plus 15 in 36 in
Between bed and nightstand 2 in 3 to 4 in

Two of these catch people out. A dresser needs 36 inches in front of it, because you have to stand there with a drawer pulled out. And a storage bed with drawers on the sides needs more walkway than a plain frame. The Mabel queen's drawers are 17 inches deep, so the drawer side wants about 32 inches before you can kneel and reach in. If your room is tight on width, a lift-up storage bed such as the Noria opens from above and needs no extra side clearance at all.

What Size Bed Fits Your Room? Standard Bedroom Sizes Compared

There is no single standard bedroom size in the US, but there are common ones. Building codes generally require at least 70 square feet, secondary bedrooms tend to fall between 10 by 10 and 11 by 12 feet, and primary bedrooms usually start around 12 by 14. Here is what fits in each.

This table uses real frame footprints, centers the bed on the wall that leaves the best clearance, and keeps every walkway at 24 inches or more. The last column tells you whether two nightstands and a dresser still fit.

Room Best bed size Clearance you get Nightstands and dresser?
8 x 10 ft Twin 27 in each side, 40 in at the foot One nightstand. Push the bed to a wall to free floor for a dresser
9 x 10 ft Full 31 in each side, 29 in at the foot Two narrow nightstands. Skip the dresser and use a storage bed
10 x 10 ft Queen (tight) or Full Queen: 28 in each side, 36 in at the foot Nightstands up to about 24 in wide. No room for a dresser opposite the bed
10 x 12 ft Queen Bed on the 10 ft wall: 28 in each side, 60 in at the foot Yes. A dresser opposite the bed leaves 44 in to walk
11 x 12 ft Queen, or King (tight) King on the 11 ft wall: 26 in each side Queen: yes, easily. King: yes, with nightstands under 22 in
12 x 12 ft King 32 in each side, 60 in at the foot Yes. Dresser opposite the bed with 44 in to spare
12 x 14 ft and up King or California King 32 in or more each side, 84 in at the foot Yes, plus a bench or reading chair

Two things the table assumes. Doors and closets open into clear floor, and the frame is about 64 by 84 inches for a queen and 80 by 84 inches for a king. If you choose a wider upholstered frame, take the difference off your side walkways before you order.

Queen vs King, Full vs Queen and Other Bed Size Comparisons

Queen vs King Bed

A king is the same length as a queen and 16 inches wider. Each sleeper gets 38 inches, which is exactly the width of a twin mattress. That is the real argument for a king: two people each get a whole twin bed. The cost is room width. A king needs a wall of about 11 feet to keep 24 inch walkways on both sides.

The Noria lift-up storage bed is the cleanest comparison, since it is one of the most compact frames in each size. The queen is 60.4 inches wide and the king is 77.3 inches. Both lift on gas struts to an 11.8 inch deep storage compartment that covers the whole platform, which makes the king a practical choice in a 12 by 12 room with no dresser space to waste.

California King vs King

A California king is not bigger than a king. It is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer. It suits sleepers over six feet and long, narrow rooms where width is the limit. The Clara California King measures 78 by 90.5 inches, against 84 by 87.5 inches for the Clara King. Same padded design, 6 inches narrower, 3 inches longer.

Full vs Queen

A queen is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full. That sounds small until you split it between two people. A full gives each sleeper 27 inches of width, about the width of a crib mattress. A queen gives each 30. For one adult, a full is plenty and buys you 6 inches of walkway in a small room. For two adults every night, the queen is the minimum.

The Elara rubberwood bed shows the real-world gap clearly, because the same design comes in both sizes. The full measures 57.3 by 78.8 inches with two storage drawers, and the queen measures 63.8 by 84.7 inches. Going up a size costs 6.5 inches of width and almost 6 inches of length.

Twin XL vs Twin

Same width, but a Twin XL is 5 inches longer. It is the standard dorm mattress, and the two are not interchangeable: a twin mattress on a Twin XL frame leaves a gap at the foot. For a child's room, the Lilja twin platform bed takes 42 by 79.7 inches and hides a pull-out trundle for sleepovers, which is more useful than a bigger mattress in an 8 by 10 room. For dorms, our loft bed guide covers Twin XL frames in depth.

Platform, Storage or Loft: Which Frame Suits Your Room Size?

Once you know the size, the frame type decides how much of the room you get back, and it changes the bed frame dimensions more than most people expect. Queen platform bed dimensions alone range by several inches depending on the headboard.

  • Platform bed. The default. No box spring, a low profile, and usually the smallest footprint for its size. Look at the clearance underneath: the Aveline stands 10.2 inches off the floor, enough to slide flat storage bins under it.
  • Storage bed with drawers. Replaces a dresser in rooms that cannot hold one, but only if you have the side clearance to open the drawers. The Celiane pairs four drawers with a footboard cubby and no headboard, which keeps it to 82 inches long.
  • Lift-up storage bed. The best storage bed for a narrow room, since nothing opens sideways. The whole platform lifts, so the space under the mattress becomes one large compartment.
  • Loft bed. Trades height for floor space. The Jorven queen loft takes 63 by 82.7 inches of floor but leaves 40 inches of clear height underneath for a desk or sofa. Watch the length on lofts with built-in desks: the Esvik full low loft runs 94.1 inches long, 19 inches more than the mattress.

Nightstand Height and Dimensions: How Tall and How Wide

Nightstands are where a tight room is won or lost, because they sit inside the walkway beside the bed. Of all the nightstand dimensions on a listing, two matter.

Width. Your side clearance minus about 4 inches. A 24 inch walkway takes a nightstand up to 20 inches wide. A 30 inch walkway takes up to 26.

Height. The answer to how tall should a nightstand be is simple: the top should sit within 2 inches of the top of your mattress. Add the frame height to the mattress thickness to get that number. On a frame with an 11.5 inch platform and a 10 inch mattress, the mattress top is 21.5 inches, so a 22 inch nightstand lines up almost exactly.

Nightstand Width Height Fits
Granada 2-Drawer Nightstand 18 in 22 in 10 x 10 rooms and 24 in walkways
Sabine 2-Drawer Nightstand 20.5 in 21.9 in Queen rooms, matches the Sabine dresser
Louis 2-Drawer Nightstand 21.6 in 23.8 in Thicker mattresses, traditional rooms
Annelise 2-Drawer Nightstand 23 in 22 in King rooms with 28 in or more each side

The Louis is the one to pick if your mattress is 12 inches or thicker. Its solid wood and veneer case, with dovetailed drawers, stands 23.8 inches tall, which matches a deeper mattress on a standard platform. The Annelise, in high-gloss black with gold trim, is the widest of the four and needs a king-size room to breathe.

Dresser Dimensions: What Fits After the Bed

A standard dresser size runs 15 to 18 inches deep and 40 to 64 inches wide, so depth rarely decides anything. Width does, along with the 36 inches you need standing in front of it. Measure the wall you have left after the bed, take off the space for door swing, and choose from there.

Dresser W x D x H Room it suits
Marin Curved-Front 6-Drawer 43.3 x 15.8 x 29.5 in 10 x 12 rooms, short walls between doors
Sabine Fluted 6-Drawer 47.2 x 17.7 x 29.9 in Queen rooms, pairs with the Sabine nightstand
Camille Fluted 9-Drawer 59.1 x 15.7 x 31.6 in 12 x 12 rooms and up
Marielle 9-Drawer Dresser TV Stand 62.9 x 15.6 x 31.1 in Primary bedrooms where the dresser also holds the TV

The Marin is the small-room pick. At 43 inches with handleless curved fronts, it fits the short wall between a door and a corner, and nothing sticks out to catch you in a 44 inch walkway. The Sabine is 2 inches deeper than the others, which buys deeper drawers, and its fluted trim and solid wood legs match the Sabine nightstand if you want a set. If the dresser is going opposite the bed with a TV on top, the Marielle is long enough to hold a 65 inch screen. Our TV stand sizing guide covers screen to stand sizing in detail.

How to Measure Your Bedroom Before You Buy

  1. Measure wall to wall at floor level. Baseboards and radiators take an inch or two that a tape measured at waist height will miss.
  2. Mark every door swing and closet door. A door that opens into the room claims a quarter circle of floor nothing can sit in.
  3. Note windows, vents and outlets. A headboard over a heating vent or a nightstand blocking the only outlet will bother you every day.
  4. Tape the footprint on the floor. Use the frame's overall dimensions, then walk around it. Painter's tape is cheaper than a return.
  5. Check the route in. Measure the narrowest doorway and any stair turn. Most frames ship flat, but a fully assembled headboard still has to get through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a queen bed fit in a 10x10 room?
Yes. A queen fits, with about 28 inches on each side and 36 inches at the foot, using a frame around 64 inches wide. That leaves room for two nightstands up to about 24 inches wide, but not for a dresser opposite the bed. If you want a dresser in the room, choose a full, or keep the queen and use a storage bed in place of the dresser.

How wide is a king size bed?
A king mattress is 76 inches wide, or 6 feet 4 inches, and 80 inches long. The frame adds more: the king frames in this guide measure 77.3 to 84 inches wide depending on the headboard and upholstery. Plan on a wall of about 11 feet to keep 24 inch walkways on both sides.

Is a full bed big enough for two adults?
For occasional use, yes. For every night, most couples find it tight. A full gives each person 27 inches of width, about the width of a crib mattress, while a queen gives each 30 inches and a king gives each 38.

What is the difference between a queen and a king bed?
A king is 16 inches wider than a queen and the same 80 inch length. Each sleeper on a king gets 38 inches, the width of a twin mattress. A king needs a room of about 12 by 12 feet to fit nightstands and a dresser comfortably, while a queen works from 10 by 12.

Is a California king bigger than a king?
No. In California king vs king, the California king is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a standard king. It suits sleepers over six feet tall and long, narrow rooms. A standard king gives more total sleeping area.

How tall should a nightstand be?
Within 2 inches of the top of your mattress. Add your frame height to your mattress thickness to find that number. With most platform beds and a 10 to 12 inch mattress, that usually lands between 21 and 25 inches.

Do I need a box spring with a platform bed?
No. A platform bed supports the mattress on built-in slats or a solid deck, which is what replaces the box spring. Every platform and storage bed in this guide is listed as needing no box spring. Adding one would also raise the mattress and throw off your nightstand height.
